Made in Iberia, Christ Church Centre

A look through the operatic output from Portugal and Spain from the Baroque to the Romantic Nationalist Movement - Ricardo Panela (baritone), accompanied by Natalie Burch.

In this morning's lecture we will have a look at the operatic creation in Portugal and Spain through the ages. Starting one of Europe's superstar composers in the 18th century - Marcos Portugal - we will then all the way to Iberian Romantics Manuel de Falla, João Arroyo and Alfredo Keil.

Focusing on the work of Marcos Portugal, an extraordinarily popular figure in the European operatic scene, we will learn about one of the very few composers whose output covers the 60 years between the late Baroque, Classical and Bel Canto periods.

We will then learn how the Nationalist movements of the late 19th Century in both Portugal and Spain influenced the music created in these countries. Focusing on Falla’s La Vida Breve and Arroyo’s Amore e Perdizione, we’ll learn how these two composers stylised and integrated popular influences, creating music which at the same time pays homage to both a secular tradition and also the European operatic trends of the time.
